UFO Studios

UFO studios, opened in September 1998 after two years design and construction work, are located in a century old brewery building right in the centre of the city, and have quickly established themselves as a major facility catering for music production (both stereo and 5.1), sound design, mastering, post production and film/TV music production. With two 35 sq.m control rooms and a 60 sq.m variable acoustic live area, the studios are equipped to handle anything from small midi projects right up to orchestral work.

Combining analogue and digital technology is central to UFO’s philosophy. The VTC console and analogue tape machines allow individual sounds to be designed using tube technology and tape compression, while an in-house 32 track 24 bit Pro Tools system offers all the flexibility of cutting-edge digital performance.

Studio owner Jens Reule recalled his first encounter with the VTC at an AES exhibition: “I was captured by the nice design of the VTC, and since I was looking for a good sounding console, I checked out the EQ - and was immediately impressed by its warm sound, which even in extreme positions doesn’t sound harsh. Doing a lot of sound design, this console seemed perfect for my use, and what also helped convince me was the VTC’s combination of tube and solid state technology - which even meets hi-fi specs in terms of low noise and crosstalk.?br />
Since the VTC has been installed, it’s been put to good use on numerous CD projects including the Delphi Big Band, Russian vocalist Morin Smole and the Caroline Wegener Band, while it’s also been employed in the re-mastering of six vinyl rock albums where the VTC’s equalisation qualities really shone through.

Jens concluded by saying: “All my customers have been very satisfied with the sound of the console, and it seemed that even when we were mixing for hours our ears weren’t getting tired of the music - maybe this is the magic effect of the tubes and the lower order harmonics that they produce! Everyone has been impressed by the open, warm and ‘big?sound of the VTC, which is ideal for tracking and really helps us with sound design.”
